Wow - the time has certainly flown by, and I haven't written about online shopping for a very long time! Things have been busy!

Sick of Shopping...

I've got to say, I went past the shops a few times this holiday period (we live by Botany Town Centre & I just can't resist seeing how many people turn up on the busy days).

I have to say, this year the shops have been very quiet. The mall was certainly not full (except for Boxing Day, where it was completely packed).

I went to the shops on the 27th December, and it was like a ghost town - very bizarre (but great as well - no traffic). It was quite weird, I bought something (and I can't even remember what it was now), and the eftpos terminal was super quick - the little screen popped up & said "accepted" before I could scratch my ass - shows how quiet it really was out there.
People must be feeling the pinch, or perhaps are shopping much earlier for xmas this year, or are perhaps searching for that bargain online? Or... are people just like me - can't be bothered with all the rush? The neat thing about living by one of the big Shopping Centres, is that there are loads of other shops just "outside" the mall vicinity, and people from out of the area don't know about them - so they are always super quiet.

One of the things I love about the net, is the online bargain shopping. I know there are plenty of shops out there (in cyberspace) that are just trying to rip you off (you know, buying stuff on "special" at the offline shops, and then selling them full price in their online shop). But, there are also some great deals to be found. I am always searching them out, trying to find the "ultimate" in bargains. I guess that's why I started my "bargains & specials" section (I know, it's a bit slim, but every time I find something I pop it in there - it's growing slowly)..

Anyway, I know I normally recommend online shopping, but until Monday (when all is almost back to normal) it is probably a good time to do some offline shopping.

This is a great time of the year! Why?? Shopping, and lots of it...

Easter Online Shopping

Hi Everyone,

Are you ready for Easter? Have you got your eggs, and toys ready for the kids? I hope so, there are only a few more days.

If you have not, you can still shop online with many of the food shops offering overnight services. I am always tempted by the food shops, especially those that have scrumptious sweet goodies. I am not much of a cook myself, so will use any excuse to buy something that someone else has cooked, Easter being no exception.

Although, we have had our fair share of Easter eggs. The trouble is, they start popping up in the shops from early March, and who can resist the sweet taste of chocolate? Certainly not me.
I notice Cadbury has peppermint chocolate marshmallow eggs this year, which combines three of my favourite ingredients. Trust me, if you love peppermint, give them a try, or two tries, or perhaps three..

Why would You want to Buy a DVD?

I could never understand the value of buying a DVD. Generally you would watch a movie once (or twice if it was a really good one), and that was it.

You’d put the DVD away, and never watch it again – pretty much a waste of $20 to $30.

But.... then I had a kid. And, it was then that I discovered kids are different. They will watch a DVD 30 times without getting bored. In fact, they will watch it 30 times in a row without getting bored.

So… there is value in buying DVD’s when you are looking at someone watching it that many times (of course, it is worth buying your own favourite movies on DVD as well).

I like buying the multipacks – where you get about 3, 4 or 5 DVD’s in the one case. The reason I prefer the multipacks is that kids are not that selective. They will pretty much sit in front of anything. So – buying a lot of DVD’s all at once can give you up to 10 hours of viewing pleasure.

The other thing I do is purchase movies that are slightly older (not new releases) so that they are cheaper. If you buy a movie that is 6 months old, rather than released ;last week you will quite often get it around 1/2 price.

Although… that does not always work. With brand new popular movies (released this week), you will find that the big shops compete with each other, and have fantastic prices for the first week. As an example, when the latest Harry Potter came out on DVD the purchase price was $39.95. However, as part of the opening special most shops had the movie on sale for $26.95 (which is below what you will pay today, some 6 months down the track).

The one thing that is plentiful on the net are online DVD shops. You will find a whole host of them out there. In the Grizzlynut Online Shopping Directory you will also find a large range.

Food, Food & More Food

So... I went down the shop before - to buy some hamburger buns (I had the patties, but forgot the bread).

When I was down there I brought:

Hamburger buns, milk, hot-cross buns, a box of doughnuts, 4 packets of drink mix and a pack of lollies - a total cost of $15.00 (the buns cost me $2.70). So... I basically spent $12.30 more than I needed to. And.. that was a good day...

How often do you go down the road for 1 item, and come back with a bag full?

Which is why I love buying food online. You don't have the tempation of all of those yummy looking treats (doughnuts, lollies & hot-cross buns were not essentials).
You pay a little bit for delivery, but it works out to be a lot less than what you would have paid out for the extras, you get someone else to do all of the running around, and you are saving your waist line as well.

If you live in New Zealand, and are looking specifically at grocery shopping, go to woolworths and foodtown. I've been using Woolworths for a long time now (maybe eight or nine years), and I never get sick of it - and always recommend it to everyone I know! The thing I love about woolworths is that you can create a shopping list, and then save it. So... the next time you go grocery shopping, it takes you 10 minutes (just grab your saved list with all of the essentials, and then add any extras on).

If there is one thing I love, it's wholesale shopping. Getting something that much cheaper than in the shops.

The products themselves are not of lesser quality. They are identical to those items in the shops. The difference is that they haven't had all the additional fees that are imposed on them if you buy them in a shop. (If you bring them in yourself you don't need to pay for an accountant, a receptionist, a shop assistant, a shop manager, rental on the shop, electricity, water etc....).

So, when I find a great wholesale online shop I eagerly add it to the grizzlynut online shopping directory (in the wholesale section). We currently have 71 wholesale, and dropshipping online shops in the directory. The online shops cover everything from household items, to jewellery, to electronics, to lingerie. So you can shop online for pretty much anything and everything.

And... I have to tell you - there are some great wholesale products in there. You can find some awesome bargains and deals. Even better - is going to a wholesale online shop, and then finding something on special! So you get an even better deal than normal.

The one thing you do need to take into account are shipping fees and customs fees. Try and find an online wholesale shop with free shipping (there are a few - especially the jewellery and perfume wholesale shops), so you don't have to take this into account. Don't buy a product without working these out.

The one thing that the big companies have, over you - are that they buy in bulk. So they can work out great deals when it comes to shipping, and purchasing power. So you do need to check out the product you are interested in. Make sure that it really is cheaper once you account for customs, tax and shipping. The last thing you want is to go through the hassle of shipping, only to find it the same price in the shops.

Generally though - this is not the case.

Beating the Summer Heat

Wow it's hot out there. In New Zealand that is.... I'm sure in other regions of the world, people are shivering in their boots.

It always makes me laugh how we complain during the summer, when it's too hot, and then complain during the winter, when it's too cold. We also complain, when we haven't had a really hot summer, or a really cold winter.

It seems that it's very hard to please people - they always want it "just right" - except that nobody can agree on what "just right" is exactly.

Anyway... if you are feeling the summer heat, there are a few things that will help you keep cool.

1) Air Conditioning
If you can afford it, make sure that you invest in a good air conditioner. And.. unfortunately the cheapest is not always the best.
A decent air-conditioning system for an average 3 bedroom house will easily cost you $15,000.
If you can not afford this, you can always go the cheap portable unit, and use it in only 1 room (for example an office, or a family room). This will cost you around $1,000.
If you can not afford an air conditioning unit, invest in a good fan - fans are not as effective as air-conditioning units (hence the cost). As soon as you turn a fan off the room will heat up once more. You also need to be directly in the flow of the fan, for any effect to be felt.

2) Fluid Intake
Drink plenty of fluids. The best fluids to drink are water, and juices. They ensure you are fully hydrated, and don't feel exhausted in the heat. Tea also has a cooling effect, so later in the day drink a cup of tea - make sure the tea is decaffinated though.

3) Light Clothing
Wear as light a clothing as possible. If you work in an office, invest in some classic cotton shirts - that are as light as possible. Wearing dresses, skirts, or shorts instead of long bulky pants will keep you cool.
If the kids are at home, get them into their underwear - get rid of all of the other clothes. As they get older (and more thoughtful about their bodies), a cotton dress, or pair of shorts will suffice.

4) Ice Chips
Go and get some ice from the freezer & suck on it (or ice-blocks if you prefer). If you haven't got any, take a trip down to the local petrol station and buy a bag (it will only set you back about $5). You can also place ice chips in a hat, in your pockets, or if you feel really brave, down your underwear.

5) Water
Get yourself in the pool, in a lake, or under the sprinkler (depending on where you are). There is nothing better than a quick dip to keep you cool. If you can't manage - go and take a cold shower, or bath.

6) Stay indoors
Stay indoors until the heat has worn off. Don't do any heavy work until later in the evening.

Follow the above tips, and you will have a manageable (not to mention happier) summer. And... if you are partaking in outdoor activities - don't forget to cover up with sunblock, sunglasses & a hat!

Uniquely New Zealand

New Zealand is a Beautiful Country. I never tire of waking up in the morning and looking out of my window and seeing about 1000 or more different trees greeting me.

And... I live in the City.

Living, or Visiting the Country offers much more in the way of nature. Many film companies choose New Zealand as a location when filming the countryside, as it is unique and beautiful (as an example TheLord of the Ring and The Lion the Witch and The Wardrobe were filmed here).

I always find that the uniqueness, and beauty of New Zealand comes out in our products - especially in the New Zealand jewellery, and wood products.

The greenstone (or jade), is some of the most beautiful in the world. Often you will see jade from other countries, but it just doesn't cut it. The New Zealand jade seems to bring a part of New Zealand with it - the green seems brighter, and yet deeper at the same time.

Even the stunning shapes, and characters come from the New Zealand country side. For example, you will see the shape of the fern, a native New Zealand plant, repeated over and over, in many of the New Zealand inspired designs.

Kiwis are also a fun lot of people. They like making fun of themselves. People say "You guys have more sheep than people over there". So... we make a joke of it, and start selling sheep products - sheep soap, chocolate sheep droppings (no - they're not real droppings) and more...

Which is why I always love adding New Zealand (or what I call Kiwiana) online stores to the Grizzlynut Directory. You will find all sorts of fun, and beautiful products in these shops.

We have upgraded our search engine at Grizzlynut. We now index many pages of the shops we have on Grizzlynut, which means that you will find it a lot easier to search for something.
For example, we did a search for batman, and got 87 results, with various batman figures, accessories and other items. Whereas before you could just do a search for a shop name, or a general description, you can now search for products inside the actual shops.
But, rather than trying to explain the search, I will let you see for yourself. Our new search engine is on every page of the directory. The 1000+ Items Wedding Store

My brother is getting married shortly, which has brought me to look at a number of wedding shops to add to the directory.

You will now find a decent number of wedding shops for Kiwis - containing apparel, accessories, destinations and more in the Grizzlynut Wedding section (which is currently under clothing, bridal).

However.... If you do not reside in New Zealand, that is, if you do live in the United States - there is another store for you to look at. It is called the Knot, and they offer unique wedding favors. The online shop itself is adorable, not to mention all of the knick-knacks & items contained within.

You will find wedding cameras, card holders, candy, chocolate, bridesmaids gifts, favors tags, groomsman gifts, t-shirts, necklaces, bracelets and more. In fact - The Knot has pretty much everything & anything to do with weddings (over 1000 items if you want me to be a tad more accurate). And... if you are looking at the last minute, they even have a "rush" service - so you'll get your goods in time for the big day.

In fact, The Knot is such a comprehensive shop, that the only thing they don't seem to have is the actual bride, or groom - sorry single people - you'll have to look elsewhere for that....

New Search Engine Function to Search almost 1900 online shops

Today we have had a big breakthrough with our search engine capabilities. Today, at Grizzlynut, we crossed the barrier, and became a search engine / directory.

You have the normal Grizzlynut online shopping directory (the shopping mall with over 1800 shops), but we have added a NEW search box (called Search Products) on the left hand side of the directory. Add anything at all into the search box (such as diamond rings) and then click on the search button. The directory will bring back anything from the 1800 shops that matches "diamond ring".

So... not only can you now search through our measly descriptions of the shops - you can find the actual products - try it for yourself - it can be found at http://www.grizzlynut.co.nz/directory

Like I said - we still have the old search box - this is still suited for searching a broad term (e.g. jewellery, or bikes), or a website name. This is what I refer to as window shopping - you know you want a ring, but aren't sure of the type for example. This can be found directly underneath the new search category and is titled search category/websites.

Shops that Deceive...

I found out some interesting news the other day that I thought I would share (well share without revealing the source)...

There is a big shop in New Zealand (one of our largest), that have specials just about every week. Everyone thinks they are getting great deals from this shop.

But... in fact, the shops has put all of their prices up (so they are about 20% more expensive than every other big retailer), and the special prices are in fact just the normal retail price of every other shop.

I was shocked when I was told this - as I am a regular shopper. So - I thought I would go and check it out. Sure enough, many of the products on special are in fact the same price as everywhere else.

It was quite odd that I (and most other people I know) had never figure this out. I thought about it, and came to the conclusion that this is how they hide it.

They do have some genuine sales, and place these in their catalogues. When people come into the shop to view the genuine sale - they find there are a lot more things on sale as well (the problem being - all the other things on sale, are not really on sale - they have just been marked down to the same price as every other shop).
Many people buy on impulse, so when they enter the shop, and see that this light (for example) has 25% off, this weekend only - think - well I might as well get it now - and fall into the trap of paying the regular retail price, for something on "special".

So.... very dodgy business - and from one of our major retailers! You would think that the major retailers would be able to get better deals to start with, without having to resort to such tactics.

My advice - don't buy on impulse. Of course, if you buy online, you are more likely to look around online, as it is much easier to do so - so take advantage of online shopping.

Adults Only

I recently added an online shop to my website - Adult X Toys.

I don't generally add these types of shops (although I do have a fair number, around 30 - I add them slowly) to my website, because I'm not sure how people will take them. Some people may take offence, and stop visiting the website.

So... I haven't added any for a while (so haven't really taken much notice of the stats). But... to my surprise, the shop was taken very well by punters - and had more looks than any other shop in the past week (don't worry - I can only see numbers - I don't know who has looked at the site).

I guess the reason people like to buy videos, toys, and lingerie online is that it is very anonymous. You get to scour through the range (without anyone giving you that "look" out the corner of their eye), and you can spend as long as you want choosing the right thing for you.

You also get your package delivered in a discrete package (not an envelope covered in a half naked woman) - just a plain white, or brown courier bag.

I always remember our Video store having this "curtained" section - with "Adults only" plastered everywhere. Of course... if you tell a child that they're not to do something - what are they going to do? So... the only people that frequented the place were kids, or adults in disguises.

But... no more - now you can purchase, or rent R18 videos online - have them delivered to your house - and no-one is any the wiser.

Christmas time is all about giving. It's when you open your heart and give money, food and pressies to those in need.

Shopping Online - Failing in New Zealand?

I have read (often recently), that it is almost impossible to shop online (or rather, that New Zealanders don't like to shop online).

I find this difficult to believe - Trademe is doing huge business. And... I think that the other online shops, will also do great business, as long as they start advertising their products - and getting their names out there.

I see a lot of fantastic shops on Grizzlynut - and it would be a shame to see these go. The thing I love, about shopping from an actual shop (as opposed to a user on an Auction site), is the added assurance that you have, that you are actually going to get the product.

Contrary to popular belief - it does cost people to set shops up (you have to advertise an online shop - which can mean big money) - so only people that are serious (not serious about conning) are going to do this (most even give their phone numbers & addresses - so you can ring & make sure of the legitimacy). Unlike the auction sites, where anyone can have a "false pseudo" & take your hard earned money (yes - I have brought stuff from auctions that I didn't get, and also stuff that was really crappy & I bought for twice the price it should have).

The other thing I like about shopping online - you can get a great range of products that you can't normally find. For example - I put this shop Dolls from India, on Grizzlynut the other day. They make specialised Barbie Dolls, and custom dolls - all with traditional Indian clothing. Absolutely adorable! Now tell me - next time you go to Botany Shopping Centre - where can you find these? The answer - nowhere!!

So.... give the online retailers a break, shop online. Get more choice, more bargaining power (generally products are cheaper), and guarantees that you're going to get a great product.

It's funny how you just seem to get over one spending spree (i.e. Christmas), and another one jumps in (Valentines Day).

For many of us, Valentines Day (February 14th) has never been a big deal - I don't think I have ever celebrated it (although I won't be complaining if my husband decides to dish out a pressie this year). It tends to be something that "new couples" or "young couples" celebrate.

But.... if you are in the mood, I have put together a few gifts to purchase, and things you can do, to make the day a special one (if you happen to be stuck):

So... my husband was looking through Grizzlynut for an online shop that sells watches the other day (his birthday is in March & he's giving me the big hint), and came across Kenmar Watches.

He was very impressed (and has already chosen his watch - one with a $400 price tag - I'm not sure if he liked the watch, or how much it cost), and noticed that the prices of the watches were around 1/2 that of New Zealand shops. And... they also have a "beat any other offer" - so they guarantee the cheapest watches around!

I had a look at the shop, and have to say I agree with him - the watches are fantastic (with equally awesome price tags) - check out their specials page for super deals (and I do mean SUPER CHEAP).

The other good thing - you are not getting cheap, garbagy, unknown brands - these are all the top guys (you know seiko, casio, citizen, breil, luminox etc..)

Oscar De La Renta & More...

We have updated the Grizzlynut online shopping front page, with some great new products.

My favourite being the Oscar De La Renta clutch purse that you can buy. Well and truly out of my own price range (I moan if I have to pay more than $50 for a purse), it is a catch at $US325 (remember the retail price is $650, and it is a genuine Oscar product). Shipping worldwide, the Oscar store appeals to a global market.

The fish-tail dress from East Store is adorable - the perfect glamorous if you are going to a wedding or evening party (although it may be a bit too pretty for a wedding - you may show the bride up). It is not cheap at $US140, but when you see it - you'll realise that it is worth every penny. They also ship world-wide - so if you live anywhere at all, check them out!

But, aside from these two... I do love most of the products at the Grizzlynut shopping mall - there are loads of unique & innovative goods out there. That's the one thing that brings me back to shopping online. I mean - you can find sports "tights" for men, wands, ghost equipment, scary dolls, & more. None of which you will ever see at a bricks and mortar shopping mall.

I also love the specials & freebies. My favourites are the perfume specials (just check out the specials directory & you'll soon find the perfume shops), and the range of jewellery. The reason I love these two types of online products, is that they are sooooooo much cheaper online than offline. I haven't shopped offline for these products since. I hate to say it (I do like buying "NZ made" or supporting "NZ shops" - but, if you can buy genuine perfume for 1/2 the price.....)

Probably the most "changing" category in our online shopping mall is the freebie section.

That is because loads of companies offer you free stuff, and then pull the free offer a couple of weeks down the track (which means we have to continually delete & add material). This is not a bad thing, because it means I get to search for new freebies (yes I do try out all the freebies - part of the job).

I hate dentists...

I hate dentists. I went to one last year after not going since I was 16 (which made that 15 years). It didn't turn out too badly - I had to get all of my Wisdoms out, but my teeth were in good condition other than that (although - as a result of pulling my Wisdoms out he stuffed one of my other teeth up - so now I have to go back - not looking forwards to that).

What do I hate about dentists? I don't know really - Well, actually I do - it's the drill. Not so much the pain that it inflicts (well - maybe the pain), but more the sound. The sound is awful - the worst noise in the world).

If you hate dentists then give the Hayfield Dental Care Clinic a go (if you live in Alexandria that is). They have the best dentists, dental nurses, surgeons & practitioners in the United States working there - so are sure to take good care of you. They have been open since 1987, and welcome new patients & emergency cases.

Charles Brown DDS PC has been working at Hayfield for ten years, and has performed a lot of surgeries. Graduating from the Medical College of Virginia, he has worked at Hayfield Dentist Clinic ever since. Charles is just one of the trusted Dental Physicians.

If you don't live in Alexandria, be sure to "vet" the dentist out before going. Talk to friends & family (who are more than willing to share "horror stories"). Once you go, you'll wonder why you hadn't been for so long - it's not as bad as it is inside your head.

Page Rank - What's the big Concern?

I have to say - it bothers me a little that people concentrate on getting high page ranks for their websites.

I see quite a lot of "crappy" websites with PR's of 5 or more (and their owners bragging about it), and yet they are not showing up in the search engines so well (Why? probably because the page rank is less of a concern as they would think).

If people concentrate more on trying to build their websites, and gain "quality" links - from relevant websites, that actually want to link to you (rather than just because it is going to get you (or them) somewhere on a search engine), they will find that they probably do better in the search engines.

What's the point of getting a whole pile of links from a link farm? Or a whole pile or irrelevant links? Nothing! Google is going to catch on (if they haven't already) & these links are going to be worth nilch. And... don't pretend that you're doing it for your visitors - they are never going to see links on some back page - I mean when was the last time you clicked on a page that said "link directory 29" - I'm going to wager NEVER!

Spend time on content people! Let say... you have a good page rank, and you somehow manage to get to number 2 on google for a key-word - if you have "garbage" on your website - what do you think people that come visiting are going to do? Let me tell you - hit the back button quick smart (never to return!!!).

Be a smart webbie - make a good, useful page & then grow it.

Remember - if you start out with a rotten seed, you aren't going to get much fruit!

Whether you are looking for Celebrex, or Penicillin - Epocrates will tell you everything you need to know about the drug, for FREE.

They are currently enhancing the drug and formulary reference guide with patient education materials and additional clinical tools.

No more Shopping - I'm all shopped out & just want to relax!

Are you all shopped out? I know I am.

For a couple of weeks after Christmas (well - after the big boxing day sales) - the shops go a bit dead (a great time to shop by the way if you hate crowds).

I'm not sure if it's the same for online shopping - I guess it is (I know my readership has halved this week). People get to the stage where they've just had enough of shopping. Having to go out, find all the pressies before Christmas (and then HAVING to shop for the bargains afterwards), can be quite draining.

People like to just put their feet up, turn the telly on, get out their on the wave-skis (or snow-skis depending on where you live), and just forget about the hassles of everyday life.

For a bit of "spare time" activity, we have some great games on grizzlynut - some you can play directly from the mall! So... if you are in relax mode, go & check them out!

We also have a good number of freebies (WAHOO!!). I haven't been through all the freebies myself, so whenever I'm bored with shopping (or gaming) I go & check out the freebies.
I've got to tell you - some of them are awesome - I got the carefree girls pack in the mail the other day & it's really cool - packed with at least $8 worth of goodies (I know - not much - but it's FREEEEEEE).

If you're single go & check out the dating section. I know several people that have found their soulmates online (as strange as that seems). It's getting more popular all the time - you don't just get the weird "computer geeks" on there that can't find anyone else - you get normal everyday people, that are just sick of trying to meet someone at the pub (or work).

What have I been doing, whilst I haven't been doing online shopping? I've been spending my time, writing a money making blog - it's all about how you can make money working from home (certainly very different to shopping). The Chumscrubber - A goodie ?!?!

So... we've been at home the last couple of days (not daring to go anywhere near the shops and those Boxing Day Specials - The online shops have plenty of end-of-year bargains as well - so don't forget to check them all out!).

Not having much to do (other than playing with all the Christmas gifts, eating the last of the Xmas Goodies, and Lazing about in the Sun), we have got a few videos out to watch.

We got 2 videos yesterday (Lemony Snickets..., and The Chumscrubber).

I must say - Lemony Snicket wasn't all that great. My son wasn't overly impressed (he normally sits glued to any kids movie - from Harry Potter, to Batman, to Starwars) - he kept asking if we could change DVD's.
Myself - I thought it was okay. The reason being only okay, is that it was one of those movies that had been "hyped" out, so I was eager to get it out on video (thinking it had to be awesome with all the TV-play, and reviews that it had). I discovered that it was no-where near as good as all the advertising that it had been given, and at times walked out of the room looking for something better to do (although I thought the acting was great - it was the story-line that let the actors down).
If you haven't heard about Lemony Snicket - it's about some kids that are orphaned and have to find new guardians (etc. etc... if you want to find out more, go & get the video out).

The other movie we got out was The Chumscrubber. I really liked this movie - it was very "slow", but it would have almost ruined the movie if it moved at a fast pace. I liked the fact that everyone was so self-absorbed, and missed what was right underneath their noses.
But.. I won't give too much away - The Chumscrubber is basically about some drug-dealer who commits suicide, and then some other people try to get hold of his drugs.
Although - there were mixed reactions in the family - some thinking it was utter crap. Me - I liked it (and seeing as I'm the one writing this - I win - Yep, it's a goodie)!

Holiday Bits & Bobs..

If you haven't already guessed I've been on holidays (which is why I haven't posted much lately).

I haven't added any shops to Grizzlynut (one of New Zealands largest online shopping malls), for at least 1 week so am feeling a tad guilty at the moment.

What did I get for Christmas - not my two front teeth!

I did get a fantastic piece of software titled "dragon naturally speaking - preferred edition" - If you don't know what this is, it's a piece of software where you speak (into a mike) & the words are magically (for us "non techie people") transformed into text. The sole reason I wanted this (thanks Santa) is because my wrists & fingers hurt when I do so much typing.

I've got version 9 (I originally had version 1 some years back, and it was crap - it didn't pick up hardly any of the words properly - so... being the person that I am - I thought I'd give it another go). I must say - Version 9 is much improved on its predecessor.

There are loads of features (such as commands for the PC - you know "Start Dragon" and all that..., and the word-t0-text feature gets it right about 85% of the time (which may not seem like a lot, but it "saves" what it gets wrong, so that next time you say the word it knows what you're saying - so really fits around your own personal talking style).

It even does a search through your computer and checks on documents that you've written, and emails that you've sent, so that it really "knows" how you write.

I think they still need to perfect it ever so slightly - maybe Version 10?
Nuance needs to make it have loads more "fine-tuning" - get you to read about 1 chapter from a book - and really pick up on everything you are saying - so that by the time you start writing a document, the text-to-word translation is right about 97% of the time (it takes a lot to make me happy - may be people would get annoyed with that much set-up time, but it would save you a lot more time in the long run).

But... for me, it suits what I need it to do - saving my fingers & wrists from agony! Well worth the buy I would say!

You're looking at $94.99 for the standard edition, and$159.99 for the preferred edition (which seems like a lot, but I figure I would have spent more $$ at the doctors - which is $50 per visit).

The good old mobile phone - it's come a long way hasn't it?

My husband was a computer techie about 12 years back, & had to lug this enourmous phone around (it was so big & bulky it was nick-named the brick). There's no way you could have fit one of those in your pocket!
I remember going out to dinner, and having everyone stare at us - they all thought he was a person of some importance, because he carried a phone about. A little girl whispered to her mother "ooohh - wonder who he is - he must be very special to have a phone".
But... not so anymore - every many and their dog has one (you even see little six year olds take them off to school like they're nothing special).
I guess that's what our parents must have thought when they saw us playing on computers - and even using them to learn at school.

Just in our extended family we have 15 of us (3 of which are under 7), and we have 14 mobile phones! And... you can see why - the features are growing all the time. Not only can you "talk" on your phone - you can use it to surf the internet, to shop (using the bank-card capabilities), to do your banking, to text for a pizza - you name it - you can pretty much do anything on the old phone these days!

Not to mention the prices - most countries in the world you can pick up mobiles super cheap - with equally cheap, & competitive plans.

So.... if you haven't already got a phone - go & pick one up - you almost "need" one these days!

One of the recipes is as follows:

Alfajores

An almond-flavored shortbread sandwich cookie with a rich caramel filling in the middle. Popular in South American countries. Makes about 24
For the cookies:
1-1/2 cups unsalted butter
1 cup confectioners' sugar
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon almond extract
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/3 cup ground almonds (can be ground in a food processor)
3 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
For the filling:
2 cups firmly packed brown sugar
1 cup half & half or light cream or evaporated milk
3 tablespoons unsalted butter
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
100% would make this again
To make the cookies:
Cream the butter with the powdered sugar until fluffy. Stir in salt, extracts, ground almonds and flour. Wrap and chill 30 minutes. (If you chill longer, you have to let the dough warm up a bit before it can be rolled. Or, do what professional pastry chefs do: whack it with a rolling pin until it becomes more malleable).
Mealwhile, make the filling:
In a medium saucepan, heat brown sugar with cream over medium heat. As it cooks, brush inner sides of pan with a pastry brush dipped in cold water. This wipes away grainy sugar crystals. Heat until mixture reaches soft ball stage (238-240 F). Remove from heat - let cool to about 110 F. Stir in the butter and beat until mixture is thickened. Add vanilla. (Heat to loosen or add additional cream). If mixture is too thin, add in confectioners' sugar.
To bake the cookies:
Roll out dough 1/4 inch thick. Cut in 2-1/2-inch circles. Bake on a parchment-lined baking sheet at 350 F for 12-14 minutes. Cool baking sheets between batches. Cool cookies on wire racks.
To assemble Alfajores:
Spread some caramel filling on a cookie. Top with another cookie and press together nicely. Be careful, these are fragile. Dust tops with confectioner's sugar.

You must be sick to death of Shopping by now right?

Whether it's online shopping, or shopping at the shops - it's something you get tired of.

Trying to find the perfect gift - the perfect book, the great DVD, the ultimate pair of jeans, the most adorable pet...

I find it harder trying to buy for someone that you really care about. For example, with my son - I always picture him in my head - playing with the toy that I've given him. I always wonder - is he going to like this - or is it going to be a "stinky" toy. So... it takes ages to find something, because I'm trying to find the ultimate gift.

So - Given yourself a break. The shops are going to be just as busy tomorrow - the traffic is not going to increase 10 fold in 1 day. Today - sit back - do the garden, do something around the house, bake some cookies (if you can cook), do whatever it takes to make you relax.

Your head will be in a much clearer place tomorrow - and looking for that gift will be easier. Sometimes, I find that if you take a step back, you give yourself time to think - and the gift will come to you - you will all of a sudden know exactly what to get (let's hope it happens for you during your relaxation day).

I will warn you though - most of the online shops have given a deadline of this Wedneday (to buy stuff for xmas) - so make sure you make your mind up by Tuesday - or you're going to have to visit those busy malls! But... that doesn't mean you can't take the time out for yourself - seriously - it will be much easier with a clear mind!

USWeb have a great blog - all about increasing your presence on the internet.

If you are looking at link popularity, then you should really check out their blog on the topic, as it is written with a great deal of knowledge (well and truly more than I understand about the whole thing).

You'll see (from reading the blog), that the websites that rate highly for certain terms, have the right on-site (what you are doing on your website - e.g. optimising the html code) & off-site factors (what others are saying about your website - e.g. what links you have, and the "keywords" that the links use) that google are looking for.

The blog above looks at the off-site factors, and link popularity. Seriously - I'm not experience enough to go into this in detail - look at the blog.

But... one thing that they do point out is how you can increase your links through blogs - and as the blogs are (most of the time) permanent - you have permanent links - that you've only paid for once (so a fantastic investment as well). USWeb runs blogitive - a network where you can pay bloggers to write about your product. Not only are you getting your product known to different people that read the blogs, you are also getting your keywords know to the search engines (and are building link popularity).

But - enough from me - like I said - I'm not really experienced at discussing this with you - just pointing out that USWeb are - so go & check their blog out if you're a webmaster!

I remember when we first turned our little modem on, and ventured into the huge space known as the internet (some 10 years back).

We searched everywhere - high & low - for tv programs from other countries.

We sadly found :( that there were none to be found! But... times are achanging. You can now find several internet TV channels that stretch the globe.

Sure... most of them are a bit cruddy (unfortunately I haven't found too many good "free" options), but there are loads of good ones to be found (generally in the paid arena).

Some online TV options for you to look through are:

Do you know what I adore?

Oriental clothing - the stunning silk materials, the beautiful stitching, the dazzling designs.... I can never walk past a chinese shop without poking my head in.

Even if you wear a gorgeous chinese top with a pair of jeans you end up feeling (& looking) glamorous (which is great if you "live" in jeans like me).

I found a great shop - East Store.

These guys offer beautiful chinese garments, for fantastic prices (and they also ship worldwide for a flat $15). I am trying to decide between a blouse (top) or a dress. I think I'll go for the top - I'm not really a dress person (even though they're great - I always feel funny in dresses - chicken legs & all that).

They also have these great matching shoes - they call them laundry shoes for some reason (I'm sure there is some kind of history lesson in that name - maybe I'll look it up one day - if you know write a comment - would love to know where that name came from). This is fantastic - because you can never find shoes to match these styles (you end up having to go for black pumps).

Be Safe & Happy this Holiday Period - by Driving Carefully!

One thing you always worry about over the holiday period, is whether your kids, friends & family are all safe and sound.

Certainly this holds true when driving all over the country (a feat many people take during this time period). The road toll over the holiday period always increases because people drink & drive, people drive when tired, people take short-cuts to get somewhere quicker etc...

At Geico they have safety tips & hints to be applied when driving - it can be found at http://www.geico.com/auto/safety/. Even if you've been driving for years the library is a great read - it really reiterates what you should be doing, & the preparation involved - BEFORE you go on that trip.

They have a new section titled Top Ten tips for Preventing Teen Accidents - which is a must read for any teen (you should make your kids read this before they get their license - make it a prerequisite (bribe them) - "if you don't read it - no driving my car").

Admittedly, Geico is suited to American Drivers (due to being US based) - in fact - if you live in the States you can get a Car Insurance estimate, by Car Insurance - the people that bring you Geico. However - even if you are not in the States - most of the points are relevant (especially the teen ones), and are well worth the read.

Most importantly - be a safe driver - don't drive when you're tired, don't speed, don't overtake on a blind corner - yada yada - just go & read the safety tips ok?

Problem - Showed my Son my Husbands Christmas Pressie

So... I did some online shopping of my own, & brought 2 PSP games for my husband.

I made the mistake of showing Mr 3 when I received them in the post. So... when Dad get's home what happened?
Let me tell you (in the voice of a 3 year old) "Dad, Dad - guess what you got for Christmas - A Car Game".
So I act all innocent "No - we didn't get you that - oh you little munchkin, you're mistaken".
"No MUM - that's what we got you Dad, 2 Car Games - can we play them now".

So now I'm stuck - either he gets something he already knows about (and it turned out he already has one of the games by the way) - or I go and buy something else (and I guess it's too late for most of the online shops - maybe if I do it today, they'll be kind & send it in time).

Lesson - Never Show my Son my Husbands pressie

Lesson learned (as they say on the Polar Express).

I wrote on one of my online shopping blogs a little while back that books were the most popular gift that people buy for christmas.

This floored me a little - I'm used to shopping for "exciting" gifts that people don't get throughout the year - you know - adventure, travel, computer games, toys etc...

When I was a kid (and maybe still a little bit now) I always used to get disappointed when I was given books or clothes for christmas. They just didn't feel like gifts - they were "normal" things that you should get throughout the year (no - if you are thinking it - we weren't spoiled kids that got everything we wanted - just seemed to me that Christmas was a time of fun & joy, not sitting in a chair reading (which I do enjoy - just not on Christmas day)).

But..... I am here to declare that other people do not feel the same way as myself obviously. I was skeptical when reading that books were the most popular - but I have seen it with my own eyes. When looking at my database, which shows how much traffic I have through each of my departments (it just shows me numbers - doesn't tell me what you look like), books is currently sitting way up high!
I'm getting more traffic in the books department than in the wholesale & specials department (by the way people - the biggest book specials & deals are in the specials department, so if you're looking for a deal...)

So - I guess people do like reading on Christmas day (or people just don't know what to buy others so end up buying a "great read").

Enjoy your good books people - hope I don't get one this year (although Steven King does have two new books out at the moment so maybe...)

What to Buy, what to Buy for Christmas

I hate buying gifts for christmas (well I shouldn't say that - I love buying gifts - I just hate choosing gifts - it can be really hard for some people)!

Have any fitness enthusiasts in the house? You know - they run every day (even christmas), don't touch the pavlova & cream (sugar, fat - arghhhh), & can't even sit still for the christmas movie (up, down, up, down - like a yoyo).

Yes??

Well - flip on over to Everything Fitness & see what you can grab for them. They have eliptical trainers, wobble boards (huh???), foam rollers, medicine balls, sauna suits - you name it - they've got it...

They have some awesome heart rate monitors there at the moment - all the popular brands as well (Cardiosport, reebok, EKHO, polar) - and none of those cheapie knockoff brands. The thing I love about the heart monitors is that it kind of kills two birds with one stone - if you have someone that is into fitness, and also loves new electronic toys - well you've got them both in one (not to mention that it's a toy that keeps the family amused for a wee while - "Can I try it now - I want to see how my heart reacts when I walk up the stairs").

If you want something super big & super expensive they have loads of equipment (treadmills, rowing machines, bikes etc..) - you don't really want to be shipping these things overseas though (unless they're much much cheaper at Everything Fitness - due to the shipping costs) - but if you're in the US perfect!

Speaking of which - if you haven't already guessed, Everything Fitness does ship world-wide, so you don't need to worry about the old "only ships to US" problem!

Just letting you all know that I've started a brand new blog (all these blogs are keeping my fingers busy I can tell you - with this & that & the shopping mall I'm not having much time to renovate the house).

The blog is called If Ya Want to Make Money, and it's all about.... making money by staying at home.

You see - there are so many different ways that you can make money at home (and there are so many ways you can SAVE money by staying at home). These were all running around in my head & I thought - hey - why not put them on paper so everyone can see these tips & guides - so that's just what I've done...

My first blog is about how to make money by writing blogs (and... did you know you can even get a free blog - you're reading one - I've paid zip for this blog - and it looks fab right?)

So... get on your bike - move your butt over there - bookmark it - is bound to be a winner (I hope).

You know... it's funny - when I started an online shopping mall I thought to myself - yeah - I'll put about 1000 online shops on (that was my goal) & that will cover everything....

But... I was oh so wrong - It amazes me just how many online shops there are out there - I've already got 1750 online shops on grizzlynut - and would have at least another 2000 NZ shops to put on, and about another 4000 global shops - so my new target (by June next year) is 3000 (we'll see how close I am to that).

The worst thing I find about an online shopping network with so many online shops - the upkeep of it. Website Owners are constantly shutting their website (or just the online shopping capability) down - so we need to keep an eye out to make sure that the online shops still exist (which means going through each link, at least once each month).

If you know of any fantastic online shops - let us know - we'd love to have them on board.

Search Engine Optimization - What is it & Why do you need it?

So... here I was - I'd built a website, placed thousands of shops on it - then went & did a search on google "online shops" - but my website was nowhere to be seen...

Ok - I thought - give it some time. So I went back a week, then a month later - still nothing.

Huh????? I thought to myself - there are loads of things that come up under "online shops" -and half of them were sites that were only vaguely related to online shopping - mine was much better than several of them - so where was it???

So I started looking around the net & discovered that it was no good just to have a good website - you needed to do something called "Search Engine Optimisation" to ensure that your website is in the first couple of pages on google (and Yahoo, and MSN).

And... if you're like most of us webbies & can't afford help it means slaving for hours on end trying to get the search engines to notice you. But - if you can afford help - get it. Even if you can "barely afford it" - get help - it is a great investment - you are sure to make your investment back in a short amount of time.

So... who to find to help you? Well you could do a search for "search engine optimization (SEO)" on google (and in fact this is what you should do) - you will come up with over 33 million results.

Don't look past page 4 of google (I say page 4 because this is such a competitive term) - the job of an SEO expert is to get you noticed - if they can't get themselves noticed what are they going to do for your website?
When you do find one, do a search for them & make sure that they are legit (and I can assure you - there are thousands of people willing to share their experiences on the net about this subject).

If you are looking for a good one, I would say go & have a look at USWeb.
Why? They're on page 2 of google (they obviously know about Search Engine Optimization), they are established (been around since 1995), have helped several medium - large sized firms, and are known for having the most experienced, qualified and professional Internet consultants in the world.

In my own experience - I've done all of the work myself - due to not having the money to invest in SEO. I have made it to page 1 & 2 of the search engines - but it has taken longer - six months. It has also taken a lot of hard work - and has cost me a lot of "personal" time & money. I'm still not there for all of the keywords I want - but am concentrating on a lot of quality content - so those that do come, come back!
So I would not recommend doing this (SEO yourself) - if you can afford it - hire someone - trust me!

The Supermarket Shelves are Bare - How to Avoid the Christmas Traffic

I went shopping today - I went down to the local grocery store (supermarket) to pick up some items for Christmas (you know before it gets too busy - I used to be a checkout-chick when I was at school & I remember working Christmas Eve & the lines to the checkout went right to the back of the store - so.... not battling those crowds!).

And... do you know what - they'd run out of 1/2 of what I was going to get:
* Mixed nuts - gone (well - except for minute bags which wouldn't feed the smallest kid)
* Reduced cream (for dips) - gone
* Grape Juice - gone
* Bag of Choccies - gone

Arghhh - was frustrating! The worst thing was that they probably had the products -they were just out the back (and because the shops are busy at this time of the year, I can't be bothered waiting around for them to go back & get all of the missing items from my shopping list).

So - I came home empty handed - well I shouldn't say that - I always overspend when I go to the grocery store (you know - ooooh that looks good, ummm yeah probably should get me one of those, of course I need that extra chocolate bar etc....) - So I cam home from the grocery store laiden with goods - just not what I was after.

Then.... when I was searching for yet more online shops for the Grizzlynut shopping directory the thought hit me - what the heck was I doing??? Foodtown & Woolworths both have online shops - I should have shopped online! I mean - they can go out back & get all of my goods - I won't be standing there waiting - I'll be sitting at home with a cuppa! And.... I'm not going to be buying all those extras - so that's what I'm going to do - online food shopping - tonight - will be delivered tomorrow & I'll be sweet!
I wish Pack 'n Save had an online shop - then I'd really be cooking with Fire (because I like the cheapie deals)

Actually - that brings something else up - I used to always shop at the Woolworths online shop. Why? Well - for the simple reason that it saved me money. People always used to say "That's expensive because you have to pay a delivery fee" (was $5 at the time). But... what they didn't take into account was:
a) No petrol getting there
b) I always look through the specials page first (try doing that at a supermarket), so buy most of the products that are on special (which saves at least $10 per $100 if you're smart).
c) You aren't tempted by the "goodies"

So - if you haven't tried online shopping yet, I strongly suggest you do, and especially at this time of the year - when the crowds are awful & the shelves are bare (unless you want to wait around that is).

The first choice is not always the best... how to find some great deals nobody else knows about!

You need to find an online shop (any online shop it doesn't matter - for this example I'll use an online wholesale shop) - so what do you do?

You go to Google, or Yahoo or any search site, and click on "wholesale online shop" - and a whole pile of results come up. Automatically assuming these are "the best shops" you click on the first 1, 2 or even 10 results.

But.... a little known fact is that often - the best online shops are not the first shops - they could be anywhere in the 5,170,000 results that come up. You see - many shops get on the first page of the Search engines through a technique called "Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)" - where they do a number of things (e.g. get links from other websites, use a certain keyword several times throughout the website etc..).

So... what do you need to do to find some great online shops, and some fantastic deals that nobody else knows about?

Well, a number of things:

1) look through a dedicated online shopping directory - especially one that deals with what you are looking for. (So you could search for "wholesale online shops directory"), and then look through the directories that come up (so you are really optimising your search results).

2) Instead of clicking on the first page of a search engine (or even the shopping directory) - go to page 3, then page 15, then page 30... - most people won't even think to dig this deep in google - so straight away - you have an advantage - you are going to be finding products that people don't even know about (and remember - these products are not worse - the websites just haven't been optimised to appear on the front page of the search engines).
I not only preach this - I also practice this method. To find shops I always go to the middle of the search engines & work my way frontwards - the shops are easily as good (if not better).
If looking through an online shopping directory I always go to the back of the directory and work my way forwards.
As an owner of a directory I can guarantee you 100% that the listings at the back of the directory, are looked at about 95% less than the front pages - which means that you are going to be finding deals most people don't even know about - because they can't be bothered looking through the whole directory - they've already found something that interests them in the first couple of pages.

So.... if you are a distributor, retailer or consumer looking to get your hands on a great product - use the online shopping directories, and search from the back forwards...

And that - my friends - is my tip of the day - Use it Wisely!

Well it's about time you have...

I have been using the internet for quite some time, and came across Coffeecup software a long time back, it looked like a great company with great software.

So... when I wanted to start a website I went and had another look at coffeecup (after I remembered the name of it that was - took me a while - knew it had something to do with food, but couldn't remember the exact name - I had to keep going through the list - sausage (no), banana (no), milkshake (no)).

I downloaded their trial software of Visual Site Designer (VSD) - you see, I had no idea about how to make a website (HTML - what the????), so thought I'd take the "easy option" (according to their wesite anyway).

Within 2 hours I was so impressed with the trial version I went back & brought the registered product (and then some - actually I brought one of their packages with about 9 products - and am still pretty tempted to go back & get the lot - when I make some money from my website you know what I'm going to be spending it on...).

The reason for this - VSD, was the easiest product in the world - I had made a website in a couple of hours - sure... it was a basic one, but it looked great. Not only that - it was so easy to upload to my server. Basically - all you have to do is enter your user details & the location of where you want the website to go - hit a button, and walah - all there for you! Fantastic!

Seriously - I am not being paid in anyway to say this - if you are a beginner, and want an "easy build" website - but don't want a "template", go and purchase VSD (in fact - don't even buy it - go for the 1 month trial - just to prove to yourself how easy it is).

Where is the Online Shopping????

As you know, Grizzlynut is an online shopping directory - where you'll find online shops.

So.... what do I do? I spend much of my day searching out new online shops - which is what I've just been doing for the last half hour. But, I got fed-up, so had to stop & write about this annoyance.

And - I have to tell you - it is really bugging me, the amount of websites that don't have online shops. Why would you go through all the expense, and effort, of making a great website, only to give people an "email address", or "shop address" to finalise a purchase?

If you are going to describe the product in detail, and give the price for it, right there on the website - why don't you go one step further and allow someone to purchase the product off your website? Spend the extra money & get a shopping cart set-up (it will be money well spent).

Even if you just add a pay-pal button, where people can click & be taken to paypal (after all - paypal is very secure, and that way you don't have to pay for credit card facilities, and a secure site.

There are free shopping carts, if you don't wish to spend the money (shop-script, e-commerce etc..) - just do a search on google for "free shopping cart" - you are bound to find what you are after.

My advice - do yourself, and your customer a favour - get an online shopping cart. You have put all this effort into your website, make it pay for itself, by giving your customers the opportunity to buy from it.

Wow - there's some awesome bargains out there right now!!

Wow!! I can't believe how many online shops are having bargains at the moment.

I mean - I always knew that the shops had specials at this time of the year, but the online shops seem to have super dooper bargain-bin-basement specials!

I guess, it is much easier to be an online shop - you don't have the high overheads associated with a normal shop, you don't have to go & change every price-tag when you have a special & you don't have to physically hang signs up all over the place (maybe virtual ones...).
I change the specials on my own page every couple of days & it takes about 20 minutes. Whereas, with a real-life shop, it's probably going to take a good hour (and they would have to get in early, to do it before all of the patrons visit).

The retailers I have found giving the biggest specials out there at the moment are the perfume, and beauty retailers. If you visit the Strawberry Net, and Beautive Specials pages - you are going to find BARGAINS!!!

I'm pretty sure that the chemists that sell these products, don't even get them at the prices that these two sites offer (p.s. if you own a chemist - check these guys out - they have free shipping, so you can get some great bargains for selling in your shops).

I was having a look on the auction sites, and plenty of people have just taken the pictures from the websites & posted an auction (at an inflated price - & they normally charge shipping as well). If only the people had looked around before hitting the "buy" button - they would have realised they could get the perfumes much cheaper elsewhere.

So... a tip - don't be silly - check out the net for great bargains, at the online shops. If you didn't already know - we are compiling a specials page at Grizzlynut - this is where you'll find all of the specials pages for the online shops - most of which ship anywhere & everywhere in the world.

Easy Peasy Christmas Meal for a Small Family

Cooking for a small family?

Ditch the Turkey & go with Chicken, and cold ham this year. For one - the chicken is easy to cook, and doesn't take a lot of time, and the ham is easy to prepare...

Buy a pre-stuffed Chicken - that way all you have to do is pop the chicken in the oven for a couple of hours, and you're away laughing. If you have a bigger family - get two chickens, and a ham - make sure the chickens have 2 different stuffings, so that there is plenty of choice for everyone (rub one of the chickens with peri-peri (chilli) seasoning before cooking for extra flavour).

For quick roast potatoes, microwave them (in water) for about 15 minutes (for 6 potatoes cut in thirds), before popping them in the roasting pan (in with the chickens) - then just continue cooking for another 20 minutes - to get them nice & crispy (with todays lean chickens, you may need to add a little bit of butter for that really crispy taste).

The easiest desert in the world - custard & steamed pudding. Buy the steamed pudding - cook (according to instructions), then cut in slices & plop (pre-made) custard on top - easy & yum!

Don't make this difficult this year - relax, by making things as easy as possible. Think, before you buy ingredients that will make sure you spend most of Christmas day in the kitchen.

Online Shopping for a Christmas Gift? What about Ice Age 2

I've just finished watching Ice Age 2, with my husband and my son, and I've got to say - it's a funny movie.

Don't get me wrong - it's not side-splitting humour, but enough to keep the whole family entertained. It follows on very nicely from where Ice Age 1 left off, with all the same characters (and then some).

And... at Christmas time, when you sit around the house for a little bit, it's a great tool to keep the kids amused (quietly that is). If Ice Age 2 is not your cup of tea - there are loads of other new kids DVDs out at the moment.
You can shop online for Cars (my son's all-time favourite movie), Curious George (good for the wee ones) and Over the Hedge (this one didn't grab me) to name a few.

And... why would you shop online for dvd's. Well lots of reasons. First - they are generally cheaper. Second - it's much easier than waiting in a long crowd at the shops (and the crowds are long - because our Ice Age 2 purchase was a "spur of the moment" one (when we realised it was cheaper than going to the movies, and we could watch it over & over (& over & over & over if you are a 3 year old boy), we had to wait in a queue of about 20 people (and that was a weekday). Third - you can go and buy it right now, & then forget about christmas.

It is a Specials, Sales & Bargain Bin section. I'm very excited about this section (it brings out the shopper in me)!!

Pet Hospitals

Pet Hospitals, or Vets are a scary place to me. I think it's probably because I can only ever remember my parents "going to the vet" to have a sick animal put down, when I was young.

Even when I'm going to get one of the pets vaccinated I get a chill up my spine.

But - deep down I know there is nothing to fear - Pet Hospitals are fantastic places. The Veterinary surgeons, are very similar to Doctors - they look after a pet, as one would exect a doctor to look after themselves. The hospitals are clean & sanitary. The receptionists are happy & friendly (hmmm - maybe they're not like "people hospitals" then - I have only ever met grumpy receptionists at "human hospitals").

There are a number of vets all over the world. I've always found the best way to find a new hospital is to ask people what they think. There are a lot of people with pets - and they are ever willing to tell you of their experiences with Vets. You can always use the internet as well - people will complain on forums, if a Vet has done a really bad job.
If you are new in town, and you can't find anything - do a search in the Yellow Pages - drive past the local vets. A good hospital will have nice premises - if they don't care about the building they are in - are they going to care about your animal? Ask yourself that...

Looking for a Los Angeles Veterinarian? Well - a reputable Vet Care facility is Cahuenga Pet Hospital. Here you will find, not a backyard shack - but a state of the art, full service small animal veterinary care facility (they provide medical, surgical and dental care). Like any professional institute, Caheunga are constantly educating themselves on the areas of animal health care. Short of Money this Xmas??

It’s this time of the year that the shops start to put their decorations up, and you start getting thousands of mailers in the post (or thousands of emails from online shops).

It’s a great time of the year – isn’t it? Or is it?

For some people though it’s not so great. It’s the time of the year when you have to fork out a lot of money (gift shopping, food shopping, decoration shopping) – and if you don’t have the money – you can really get yourself in trouble. Especially – if you need to be paying the bills at the same time (and the bills always seem to come right when you don’t need them!).

You want to be able to give your kids, your friends, & your family the best xmas possible – you want to be able to shop for awesome gifts that will make their mouths fall open – you want to be able to lay out the best service possible – turkey, ham, roast meats, roast vegetables, trifle, pavlova, the works… - and best of all – you want to give them a Christmas to remember.

But – the power bill & the phone bill are also due this week - so… what do you do – of course you have to pay the power bill…

There are some ways to get around the problems though:

They always say you could get the kids involved – get them to make their own crackers, & decorations – although surely this will cost more? I mean if you get $2 crackers (for a six pack) down the road, is it really cheaper to go out & purchase the bangy bits, the paper for making them, the trinkets to put inside them, etc…?
You could get cheaper meats (chicken instead of turkey etc..), sides (potatoes instead of kumara), and deserts (bread & butter pudding instead of trifle) – but is this something you want to do – if you normally have a “traditional Christmas” – it is sure to be a let-down if you have lesser foods.
And… you could get smaller pressies – there is nothing wrong with this – you could buy a whole sack of $2 pressies (or even $10 pressies), and the kids would enjoy them (maybe not your teenagers – but the young ‘uns will never know the difference).

So – what do you do. You just have to spend the money unfortunately. There are two ways to do this:

a) Get your friends & family to contribute with money (we personally do this & it works out great – we have a “family” Christmas where everyone contributes something).

b) Get a loan or a cash advance – If you are in the US, I would recommend Nationalpayday.com They specialise in “quick” (payday) loans, and cash advances. The advances will tide you over until next week – when you are due to be paid. That way – you can pay for the pressies & food, right now – when you need them - & then pay it off when you get your next pay cheque (and you can avoid the late fees – or the huge fees associated when paying with a credit card). The loans from Nationalpayday.com are great is you are just “short” of money (having already spent big on bills etc) – but will be alright in a week or two.

So – yes – there are options for xmas – make it a good one.

Online Shopping - or is that Shopping Online?? No Difference? How Not Knowing Can Cost you Placement in Search Engines

If you own a website, you all love (or loathe) looking at your results on the mojor search engines. After all - that is where all of your major business comes from (generally speaking). So.... you make your pages look all pretty, submit them to your search engines... and then... notice that the different arrangement of words can give completely different results.
Or have you??? If you haven't let me point it out.

For example - if you take the words Online Shopping NZ, and NZ Online Shopping and plug them into the search engines you'll notice that for my grizzlynut website I get the following:

Online Shopping NZ first, NZ Online Shopping second
Google - 10, 11
Google NZ - 9, 13
MSN - Nothing, 24
MSN NZ - 8, 25
Yahoo - Nothing, Nothing
Yahoo NZ - Nothing, Nothing

Surely it's just the one - you say? Not so - if I take another example:

NZ online shops first, online shops NZ second

Google - 7, 7
Google NZ - 13, 8
MSN - 24
MSN NZ - 7, 4
Yahoo - Nothing, 22
Yahoo NZ - 11, 8

So.... What you need to do if you are looking to make your pages the best they can be - to both people & search engines, is to ensure that the arrangement of the keywords is consistent (where it can be - don't make a whole new language for the sake of the search engine - you will lose readers - and what's important? Readers!!)

If we take NZ online shops for example - try and use this term on the page wherever it is appropriate. So if you are saying the following: We have several online shops for nz, you would say - we have several nz online shops.
It still makes sense, and you are giving you "words" a better chance at getting read - because the higher up the search engines they are - the more likely people are going to click on your page.

Also remember this if you have had someone offer to link to you. Be sure you are consistent about what you ask them to write - choose a word - eg. nz online shopping - and stick with it (unless of course, you have loads of websites offering to link to you - then you would use both keywords).

But... anyway - enough from me - I just wanted to point out, that if you're a small player (and 99.9% of us are), you really need to make sure that the words on your page are consistent. After all - it's better to get 1 good listing, than 2 mediocre (or even worse - bad) listings.

And.... the key thing - topic. If you have a crappy page to start with - it doesn't matter how well you choose your wording, or your linking strategies - the search engines are going to find out as some stage & kick you out. Make the web a better place & keep it quality!!

JC Penny - Bringing a little bit of America to the world

I was doing some online shopping of my own, & was on the search for Levis Jeans (513's for men), because they don't have them in New Zealand anymore (darn it), when I came across JC Penny's.

JC Penny's is an American department store, that you forever hear about, on TV. Be it comedies, dramas, cartoons - you always hear about JC Penny's. I always used to wonder what it was like, and wonder if I could buy stuff from there one day.
You know - without spending the airfare to fly all the way to America - I wouldn't mind doing that - but the cost is not the cheapest, so for now I travel through New Zealand & Australia.

But... I digress - Anyways - during my online shopping search - I came across JC Penny's online shop - and discovered they are an all-round department store - with clothing, furniture, general houseware & all sorts. I did spend a fair bit of time looking through there (soon forgetting about the Levis - they didn't have what I wanted) - but they had sooooooo much I got a bit hooked!

And... the most exciting bit of information that I found out - their online shop ships throughout the world. So... yes - they will ship to New Zealand (wohoo).

Anyway.... enough about us - you're doing some online shopping for clothes today?

Clothes shopping is soooooo hard - I find it the most difficult thing to buy online.
You can't feel the fabric, there are often small changes to colour, the sizing is awful (especially if you're talking about international sizing), and you can't see it on a normal person (generally you see it on a milky white, stick figure model - if you are "normal sized", and have asian colouring for instance - you're not going to tell if it's going to suit you).

So... what are you to do? No online shopping for clothes??? No - that's not what I'm saying. By all means you should shop online for clothes - there are some HUGE bargains to be had, and the range of different shops & clothing styles is amazing (especially if you come from a small country like New Zealand).

But - if you are shopping online, find the following in an online shop:

* A well known online shop (generally their sizes, colours etc. are more accurate)
* A well known brand (and I'm not talking about fakes here - the real thing. For example - Levis - you are always going to find the same "size" Levis, no matter where you shop)
* A trusted online shop (do a search on their name - if their sizes/colours don't match up, there is sure to be someone complaining on the internet somewhere...)
* An online shop recommended by other websites or friends (if a website is recommending a shop, generally this says good things, and as for your friends - if you can't trust them....)
* An online shop that gives you unconditional money back guarantees, and offers returns (if that skirt does look awful on you, you can always send it back - (don't get a guarantee for "only if broken" - if you don't like it, you should be able to return it).
* An online shop with a telephone number / complaints department (if there is something wrong, you want to be able to get hold of them).

So... by all means - shop online. In fact I encourage online shopping (for all the reasons listed in the first place) - just do it with all of the "rules" in mind. That way - you should get what you're looking for, and not end up with a wardrobe full of "disgusting" clothes.

Most online retailers are fantastic by the way - I've yet to find one that is really "off the mark" - but it is always a fear in the back of my mind - so I follow my steps....

Jewellery Shopping Offline - Are you Crazy???

Who still buys jewellery from the shops? Not me that's for sure (can you guess why).
Alright - I won't make you guess - I'll just tell you. It's because there are so many fantastic jewellery shops on the internet - and many of them ship all over the world. And... there are loads of great prices in those jewellery shops. Check out my directory and you'll see just how many.

This is awesome news for New Zealanders - we've been used to paying premium prices for quality jewellery for some time now (in fact - I don't know when it wasn't this way - before I way born that's for sure). Now... we (and everyone in the world) can buy quality jewellery at great prices. Not rock-bottom prices (if you want good stuff), but just good, reasonable prices.

The other thing I like about jewellery on the internet - there are so many different designs around the world, that you're spoilt for choice. No longer do you need to buy an every-day ring - you can buy a really unique, fashionable design.

If you're from the States there are some awesome sites with you in mind. For example, if you're looking for that perfect ring to match your own style, DanforthDiamond.com has an incredible selection of engagement rings, (including palladium engagement rings) which create the most adorable setting for any diamond you select. I always remember someone I know (not mentioning names) having to go back to the shop, because the ring they'd bought their girlfriend didn't "shine enough" - I can assure you - you're not going to be sent back to the shop by when you purchase here!

Big Boys Toys

I love going to those "Big Boys Toys" & other trade shows (like the home show), because there is always something for everyone.

I mean - if you take Bigs Boys Toys - I can give or take the cars (don't let my husband hear me say that, because they're the MAIN reason he goes) - they are o.k.
But, what I really like are the high-tech gadgets, and the "house type things" that can be found there.

You can find electronics (toys) for the house, like systems that let you turn the kettle on from your car, stereo systems to die for (speakers that look like pictures for example - although... what happens when you decide you don't like the picture any more?), and other "beyond 2006" type gadgets.
Loads of them probably won't make it beyond 2006 (sorry inventors), but they're cool to look at & dream about anyway..

Then, there's the cool bargains that you can bag! I remember going a few years back (when playstation games were still about $100 each), and picking up 2 for $20 each (which was a complete bargain at the time).
We also picked up some "very early" PDA's before they'd been released to the general public - everyone was very impressed with the little pointer units we were using.

Also - the effort that everyone (the companies - whether small or large) puts in - awesome - the different stands, the massive displays - people must spend a truck-load on these shows - I guess they get their name out there, so it's well worth it.

The other thing I love - the freebies - as you're going past the really cool stands, they just hand out freebies like they're lollipops - man - if it's like this in New Zealand I'd love to go to one in the States - maybe one day (if anyone's willing to sponsor my trip over I can come this year!!)

In fact - If you're from the States, and set-up the trade-shows, then listen up! Because I'm going to save you some time & effort! Have you ever had to set one up by yourself, only to find the exhibits too heavy to handle (and you have to get the guy setting up next to you to give you a hand)? ExhibitDEAL have pop-up displays so do you don't have to worry about setting up your trade show displays. In fact they have everything from literature racks to table throws.
The good thing about ExhibitDEAL is that they have things in everyones price range (so if you have a small business you don't need to do a sticky tape & blu tack job).

Anyway... enough from me - if you haven't attended any trade shows yet you don't know what you're missing (seriously - even if you're a really "girly girl" - they have stuff for you - they have "the latest" kitchen gadgets).
